We're Sy and Kana, 2 silly, chatty sisters who started this blog. We started hairbaby because of this shared belief:
✨ Asian hair deserves to shine to its fullest glory ✨
We take our hair seriously here. We've been frustrated with how much time it takes to find the best Asian hair resources in America. But we've persisted to love our hair—to baby our hair. We believe that learning about Asian hair should be easy and accessible. Asian hair is diverse, and each strand reflects a unique history that deserves to shine. We want to share our passion with the world and provide hairbaby as an Asian hair care resource.
A little about us: Kana knows Korean, Japanese, and Mandarin. She wants to use her language skills to compile overseas hair knowledge to share with fellow Asian Americans. She’s explored the beauty world since her early teens, but has always struggled to maintain her super thick, wolf-like hair (mega type-c hair with mixed porosity). Trying to make sure her hair isn’t dry AF, too poofy, and actually holds shape has taken more than a decade of experimentation. She's jetted around the world, trying various global salons, and she's bleached her hair many times. She loves to try new things when it comes to beauty and wellness.
Sy has spent most of her time not exploring the beauty world, but pondering life’s big questions about identity and purpose. She's discovered that beauty is about celebrating her body and honoring how she’ll feel at 70 years old. She enjoys matcha lattes and learning about TCM (traditional Chinese medicine). Learning how to heal the body inside out, preventative care methods, and a deep spiritual life have been the most meaningful to her overall health. She's often been described as a little grandma.
We understand that the pursuit of good hair can mean many things, but our goal isn’t to achieve perfect hair. Perfect hair doesn't exist. We live regular lives. Sometimes we don’t have the perfect diet, we party, work late, or we don’t get the trifecta of veggies, fruit, and protein. We’re depressed. And our hair feels it all.
If you want perfect hair, get a wig.
Achieving perfection has felt performative over anything else as Asian Americans. Our goal here is confidence. We believe confidence is very achievable, empowering, and can be quite infectious! Confidence is key to a healthy sense of self.
Thank you for being here, and welcome to the hrbb community 💖
